Have you heard the latest song by Say Lou Lou called Blue Ruin? It’s like a mini movie in musical form! The lyrics tell this super intense story of a woman who has fallen for someone different and she’s trying to break the news to her current partner.
You can just picture the scene – she’s stuck in this tiny little car with her soon-to-be ex, and the tension is through the roof. Not only is he understandably upset that she betrayed him, but she’s also wrestling with crazy guilt over the whole situation. Talk about awkward!
Interestingly, the song originally had more of a country vibe to it. But the duo decided to switch gears and go for this cool indie pop sound that’s giving me major 2007 nostalgia mixed with some Ray Of Light-era Madonna vibes. And get this – they kept the original demo vocals rather than re-recording them to sound all polished and perfect. I love that raw, unvarnished quality it gives the track.
