With a voice that’s equal parts delicate and defiant, Andie Mackenzie’s Poison Ivy takes us into the tangled landscape of a relationship that never quite blossomed. “Put me under your spell / Poison ivy / Tangled up fairy tale” she sings in the chorus. There’s a literary elegance to the songwriting, recalling vintage films and unfinished romance novels.
But while the lyrics ache with longing and restraint, the production bites back. Leaning confidently into rock-tinged textures, Poison Ivy unfolds with gritty electric guitars and cinematic drumming that builds like storm clouds gathering overhead. The track doesn’t rush, it broods.
