Lawrence Kim likes being in bands. The New York songwriter’s done his time in BMX Bandits, Scam Avenue, The Amber Smith, and as touring guitarist for Ryn Weaver. “It’s like being in a gang,” he says. “Us versus the world.”

So his solo debut The Hours And The Times, arriving May 15, doesn’t constitute some grand artistic statement. It was practical.

“I had written some songs, and I didn’t want to go through the hassle of finding people to play them with, rehearsing, and all the rest of it. So I decided to do as much of it as I could on my own.”

Somewhere in that process, a theme emerged. “It’s an album about being alone, which isn’t necessarily the same thing as being lonely,” Kim notes. “I didn’t set out to make an album around that, but that’s what I ended up with.”

The lead single Madeleine sounds great. I love how the production floats all the way through, looking for a point of arrival. The vocals sound wonderful, having the right vibe. You’ll be hooked right away.

The music video for Madeleine has been directed by Meredith Truax and is premiered via MAGNET. The analog warmth of the format suits an album exploring solitude and time.
