Making an album in two weeks with thirteen songs is secretly radical. Why? Well, because it requires a special form of creative honesty. Putting the ragged edges into something safer and more palatable isn’t an option. What you hear on quilium’s third album, human void, moves at the pace of thought, with all its directness and sometimes beautiful messiness.
The bedroom indie darkwave production that defined quilium’s earlier work remains intact, but more sharply outlined. The DIY aesthetic, made entirely by hand without AI support and intentionally outside commercial conventions, acts as a methodology rather than a limitation.
Textually, this might be quilium’s most cohesive work to date. The tracklist presents a stream of consciousness, I don’t know WHY, art is DEAD, every day is REVOLUTION, but the order is calculated, sustaining thematic momentum throughout the entire running time rather than simply sliding from one moment to the next. The unconventional capitalization in the track titles feels consistent with the album’s greater rejection of superficiality.
The opening track Rough DRAFTING establishes an initial tone of tenseness, partially disorienting, and dense with small textural details that become clearer the more you listen. The crisp raps sit prominently in the mix against the diffuse instrumentation. I don’t know WHY is an early standout, featuring an arrangement that truly borders on pop and drums that bounce. Art is DEAD, produced by CHAD., changes the sonic style entirely, adopting unique electronic influences. Everyday is REVOLUTION is where the energy becomes more dreamy and funky again, with Froggy Z supplying the perfect looseness.
The back half glides purposefully ahead. enclosed TRANSCRIPT is as strange as it is charming. Its skeletal structure does more with less than almost anything else here. Ants in the CAVE uses acoustic instincts, before Vapor TRAILS launches into Play the Part WITH ME, which ends in delicate complexity.
quilium clearly believes in his abilities, as the project goes in a hundred different directions. However, that doesn’t diminish its quality. Absolutely one of the coolest things you’ll hear this year. Check out human void below!
