London-born, Los Angeles-based artist Jenny JAM uses creativity as an anchor in her life and derives substantial energy from making. With Trains, Planes & Airports, her debut album, she tries to show what it means to always march on. Although there might be negative aspects tied to this, Jenny keeps it optimistic. She herself says, “No matter how dark the story, there’s always a positive twist.”

I’d call the album’s sound versatile, mingling principals of soul pop, jazz, classic rock, and reggae. Basically, there’s something for everyone here. And should something perhaps appeal to you less musically, just listen again, and you’ll certainly see value in it.

Trains, Planes & Airports has a good set of highlights. Take Friend Zoned, for example, featuring playful infected reggae-type grooves. It’s worth noting that Jenny wrote the song on a rooftop in Hampstead during the Glastonbury Festival (a special place, don’t you think?). Right next to it in the tracklist is Toy Proof, which came about when her relationship just ended and she was caring for her mother who was going through leukemia treatment. It talks about serious heartbreak plus the enlightenment that follows (“you fooled me, but not no more“).

Better Than You also sparked my curiosity due to the melodic exchange between the saxophone and trombone. Believe me, it sounds magisterial. The lyrics of this song are powerful, dealing with surviving abuse and regaining control of your own life.

It’s no wonder that Jenny has already established a fervent fan base all over the world. Her way of communicating her thoughts is inspirational, and it seems she’s always looking to reinvent the wheel. Because of this, I actually can’t wait to hear her next project. But for now, it’s time to let Trains, Planes, & Airports sink in. Start listening below!
